History of Churches in Stacyville Area

Union Presbyterian Church

  • Organized in December 1874 by Rev. Jacob Kolb with 13 charter members.

  • Before church was erected, services were held in homes as early as 1859 with Rev. Charles Vogler.

  • Prior to building the church, met with members of St. Peter Lutheran congregation

  • Church was built in 1888 with dedication on October 13, 1888 – free of debt and with 12 cents in the treasury.

  • Last services were held in the church in 1974 with the last pastor Rev. Henry Sinning.

  • The church was put on the National Registry of Historical Places 1977.

St Mary’s Visitation Catholic Church of Stacyville

  • Early services were held in homes starting in 1858 with the help of Rev. Michael Flamang and Rev. H. Felderman from Winneshiek County

  • Four years later, the services were held in a schoolhouse 2 ½ miles north of Stacyville.

  • Later services were held in a remodeled log house on a farm ½ mile north of Stacyville.

  • The first church was built in 1874.

  • Visiting priests served the church until 1878 when Rev. Joseph Hellregel became the first resident priest.

  • A new Gothic-style brick church was built at a cost of $32,000 and first occupied in 1905.

  • In 1910 there were 160 families in the parish.

  • Extensive remodeling and redecorating was done in 1970, at a cost of $140,000.

Methodist Church of Stacyville

  • Organized in fall of 1856 by Rev. W. P. Holbrook with 18 charter members.

  • Part of the Mitchell Charge until 1868 when the church was built in Stacyville.

  • The church attained membership of 70.

  • The church closed in 1944.

  • The building is now used by the Stacyville American Legion.

Congregational Church of Stacyville

  • Organized January 18, 1857 by Rev. W. L. Coleman with 23 charter members.

  • Church was built in 1860 at a cost of $13,000 at the corner of W. Main and N. Randolph.

  • By 1883 the church membership was 90.

  • The church closed in 1906.

  • The building was moved to S. Broad Street and used as a business property with these tenants:

                Ernie Halbach and Frank Heimer, clothing

                Maggie Wolf, grocery

                Art and Rose Wolf, grocery

                Norb and Barb Thome, grocery

                Betty Smith, antiques

                Marion Pitzen, antiques

  • The building was torn down in the 1980s.

 Sacred Heart Church of Meyer

  • Organized in 1901 with first pastor being Rev. J. Wirtz.

  • First held services in the chapel on the second story of school.

  • Corner stone of the church was laid in 1908.

  • The parish closed and became an Oratory of the Archdiocese of Dubuque in 2005.

St. Peter Lutheran Church of Toeterville

  • Church was organized by for immigrants and served by Rev. Jungh of Ridgeway.

  • First resident pastor, Rev. George Landgrebe, came on October 11, 1874.

  • Worship was in homes and Union schoolhouse until parsonage was built and used as a church in 1876.

  • Church was built in 1884. Church building was moved 2 ½ miles to Toeterville in 1907.

  • A new parsonage was built at that same time.

  • In 1966 a new church was built on the same site as the old church and dedicated in 1967.
